Built shortly after the town was conquered by the Ottomans in the seventeen century, the mosque was dedicated to Turhan Sultan, the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV, after whom it was also named in honour. Valide Sultana Mosque is situated 130 metres south of Archeological museum of Rethymno.
