The village, Grünfelde until 1945, is chiefly known for a medieval battle, the 1410 Battle of Grunwald between Polish-Lithuanian and Teutonic Knights forces.

In 1914 the fields around the village were the main battlefield of the Battle of Tannenberg, which was eventually named after the nearby village of Tannenberg, whence the final victory note was dispatched by the German commanders.
