Belmeken Reservoir is located in the eastern part of the Rila mountain range of southwestern Bulgaria. It is named after the summit of Belmeken, rising about a kilometer northwest of the lake.

Belmeken is a summit in the northeastern part of the Rila Mountain in southwestern Bulgaria with a height of 2,626 m. It is built up of granite. Its northern slopes are steep and rise over the Kutlinite cirque. Kolarov is situated 4 km west of Метеорологична станция Белмекен.

The Chaira Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant was built in the Rila mountain range, about 100 kilometres southeast of Bulgaria's capital city, Sofia. Part of the major Belmeken–Sestrimo–Chaira Hydropower Cascade, Chaira has generating capacity of 864 megawatts and a pumping capacity of 788 megawatts. Chaira Hydro Power Plant is situated 4 km east of Метеорологична станция Белмекен.
