Fernsehturm Berlin

The Fernsehturm in central Berlin was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the government of the German Democratic Republic as both a functional broadcasting facility and a symbol of Communist power. Fernsehturm Berlin is situated 560 metres northwest of Ravelinplatz.

The square is named after the Russian Tsar Alexander I, which also denotes the larger neighbourhood stretching from Mollstraße in the north-east to Spandauer Straße and the Rotes Rathaus in the south-west. With a rental area of 56,200 m2, it was the second-largest shopping centre in Berlin at the time of its opening, after Gropius Passagen, but Alexa was the largest in terms of number of shops. Alexa Centre is situated 130 metres north of Ravelinplatz.
