After preparatory work undertaken by the Hong Kong Museum of History, which manages it as a branch museum, it opened to the public on 12 December 2006 to commemorate the 140th birthday of the influential Chinese statesman and revolutionary Sun Yat-sen. Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum is situated 160 metres northwest of Hong Kong Baptist Church.
