Republic Square

Republic Square, also known as Independence Square or New Square is the main square in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It is used for public events. The former presidential palace, later used as municipal offices, sat on its south side until 2022.

The Golden Warrior Monument stands on Republic Square in the former capital of Kazakhstan, Almaty. The monument celebrates the independence of Kazakhstan, the identity of its people, and the role of the city of Almaty as capital of Kazakhstan until 1997 when the capital moved to Astana.

The Central State Museum of Kazakhstan is the largest museum in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and one of the largest museums in Central Asia. When first established in 1931, the museum was located in the Almaty Cathedral. Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan is situated 550 metres southeast of Republic Square.

Lermontov Russian Drama Theatre is a drama theatre named after Russian poet and artist Mikhail Lermontov located in Almaty, Kazakhstan. M. J. Lermontov State Academic Russian Drama Theatre is situated 490 metres north of Republic Square.

Köktöbe or Koktyube is a hill in Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city and former capital. At 1,100 meters above sea level, it is one of the main landmarks of the city and a symbol of Almaty. Kok Tobe is situated 2½ km east of Republic Square.
