Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand. Its height, as of 2014, is listed as 3,724 metres. It is situated in the Southern Alps, the mountain range that runs the length of the South Island. Aoraki / Mount Cook is situated 3½ km west of Plateau Hut.

Silberhorn is the fifth highest peak in New Zealand, rising to 3,300 metres. It is located in the Southern Alps on the south ridge of Mount Tasman. Its name, "silver horn" in German, was probably given by William Spotswood Green in 1882 after its resemblance to Silberhorn in the Swiss Alps. Silberhorn is situated 2½ km northwest of Plateau Hut.
