The station is in the median strip of VA-267 adjacent to the current Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride parking garage and bus station, which is on the south side of the highway. Herndon station is situated 3,800 feet north of Stratton Woods Park.

Built in 1857 for the Alexandria, Loudoun & Hampshire Railroad, the depot later served the Richmond and Danville Railroad, the Southern Railway and the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad. Herndon Depot Museum is situated 2 miles north of Stratton Woods Park.
