Mafraq is the capital city of Mafraq Governorate in Jordan, located 80 km to the north of the national capital, Amman. It is located at a crossroads, with a road north going to Syria and another road to the east going to Iraq.

The Zaatari refugee camp is a refugee camp in Jordan, located 10 kilometres east of Mafraq, which has become a permanent settlement. It is the world's largest camp for Syrian refugees. Al Zaatari Refugee Camp is situated 9 km east of Wādī al Mufarradāt.
