Sehel Island is located in the Nile, about 2 miles southwest of Aswan in southern Egypt. It is a large island, and is roughly halfway between the city and the upstream Aswan Low Dam.

The archaeological digs on the island became a World Heritage Site in 1979, along with other examples of Upper Egyptian architecture, as part of the "Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae". Elephantine is situated 3 km northeast of Jazīrat Salūjah.

It was built following the UNESCO International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, to a design by architect Mahmoud El-Hakim for an estimated construction cost of E£75 million.
