Located in the Rivière Noire District and rising to a height of 828 m above sea level, it forms part of the Black River mountain range. Little Black River Peak is situated 2½ km east of Rivière Noire Mountains.

It was named after a French ship, the frigate Preneuse, which served as a commerce raider at Isle de France and was also involved in a naval battle with the British in the 18th century.
