Ternate is the city with the largest population in the province of North Maluku and an island in the Maluku Islands, Indonesia. It was the de facto provincial capital of North Maluku before Sofifi on the nearby coast of Halmahera became the capital in 2010.

Fort Tolukko is a small fortification that was erected in 1522 on the east coast of Ternate facing Halmahera. It was one of the colonial forts built to control the trade in clove spices, which prior to the eighteenth century were only found in the Maluku Islands.

Sultan Babullah Airport is a domestic airport serving the island city of Ternate, the largest urban center in North Maluku province, Indonesia. The airport is named after Sultan Babullah of Ternate, the seventh ruler of the Sultanate of Ternate, who resisted Portuguese colonization in the Moluccas during the 16th century and is recognized as a national hero of Indonesia.
