Savannakhet and officially known as "Kaysone Phomvihane", is the capital of Savannakhet Province in Southern Laos. It is on the Mekong River. With an estimated population of 120,000, it is the second largest city of Laos.

Mukdahan is a town and capital of Mukdahan Province, which became Thailand's 73rd province in 1982. In the northeastern region of the country, on the right bank Mekong River, it was formerly a district of Nakhon Phanom Province.
