Shanlin borders Jiasian District to the north, Liougui District to the east, and is adjacent to Meinong District and Cishan District to the south. Shanlin District is situated 4½ km east of Qianshuiliao.

It is the 19th most populous district in Kaohsiung. Cishan District is situated 9 km south of Qianshuiliao.
