Bayawan is on the southwest coast of Negros Oriental. It is a moderately large town, 118,000 in the 2015 census, and has good beaches but tourism is not highly developed.

Negros Oriental is a province occupying the south-eastern part of Negros, and also includes Apo Island. The other part of Negros is the province of Negros Occidental. Santa Catalina is situated 8 km southeast of Bayawan River.
