Named after
以古昔阳城为名。昔阳故城之名，一说因位于古昔水之阳而得名；一说同“夕阳”，《尔雅》：“山西曰夕阳，山东曰朝阳”，昔阳位于太行山以西，故得名。中国国家地名信息库：“‘山西曰夕阳，山东曰朝阳’，因地处太行山之西，故名夕阳，后来夕阳转化成‘昔阳’。‘昔阳’一名最早出现在《左传·昭公十二年》：‘晋荀吴伪会齐师，因假道于鲜虞，遂入昔阳。八月壬午，灭肥，以肥子绵皋归。’……肥也是春秋时期的白狄小国，子爵，相传其都城昔阳即今昔阳县东50里东冶头村的“昔阳故城”遗址。”
