The Jervis Bay Territory is an internal territory of Australia. It was established in 1915 by the transfer of jurisdiction from the state of New South Wales to the federal Commonwealth of Australia, in order to give the federal government control of a port in the vicinity of the landlocked Australian Capital Territory. Jervis Bay is situated 6 km west of Bowen Island.

It is the location of Point Perpendicular Light, a historic lighthouse which was active from 1889 to 1993, and a replacement skeletal tower which is active. Point Perpendicular is situated 6 km northeast of Bowen Island.
