Mount Tamahunga is situated 3 km northwest of Big Ōmaha.

During the late 19th century the land around Whangateau was subdivided into small 50 acres farms and Whangateau was established with support of the county and central government. Whangateau is situated 3½ km east of Big Ōmaha.
