Situated in the Big Omaha Valley and rising to 437 m, the mountain forms part of a large taraire forest that is a habitat for many threatened species including the North Island brown kiwi, Hochstetter's frog, and New Zealand long-tailed bat. Mount Tamahunga is situated 3 km northwest of Big Ōmaha.
