Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan District in 1988, which was created from the former Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Authority Council… Shama District is situated 3½ km east of Kisi-Kwanta.

Shama is a coastal town in the Shama district in the Ghanaian Coastal Plain. It is known for its lush beaches and vegetation. It is about 25 km away from Takoradi and 160 km from Ivoiro, the border town between Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire.
