Munkholmen

Munkholmen is an islet in Trondheim Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. The 13,000-square-metre island sits in the Trondheimsfjord about 1.3 kilometres northwest of the island of Brattøra and the mouth of the river Nidelva in the center of the city of Trondheim. Munkholmen is situated 2½ km east of Høvringen.

It is built over the burial site of King Olav II, who became the patron saint of the nation, and is the traditional location for the consecration of new Norwegian monarchs. Nidaros Cathedral is situated 3½ km southeast of Høvringen.

Stiftsgården is the royal residence in Trondheim, Norway. It is centrally situated on the city’s most important thoroughfare, Munkegaten. At 140 rooms constituting 4000 m², it is one of the largest wooden buildings in Northern Europe, and it has been used by royalty and their guests since 1800. Stiftsgården is situated 3½ km southeast of Høvringen.
