The station is located near a traffic circle at the junction of Park Avenue, Union Avenue, Erie Avenue and Orient Way known as Station Square, with a grade crossing on Park Avenue. Rutherford station is situated 2,500 feet southwest of Becton Regional High School.

The center was named after the Pulitzer Prize winning poet and physician William Carlos Williams, who had been born and raised in the borough.
