Fort Randall Dam is a 2.03-mile-long earthen dam which spans the Missouri River and impounds Lake Francis Case, the 11th-largest reservoir in the U.S. The dam joins Gregory and Charles Mix counties, South Dakota, a distance of 880 river miles upstream of St. Louis, Missouri, where the river joins the Mississippi River. Fort Randall Dam is situated 1½ miles south of North Point Recreation Area.

The town took its name from Lake Andes which some say derives its name from a pioneer hunter named Handy, while others believe was named after Edward Andes, a fur company official. Lake Andes is situated 5 miles north of North Point Recreation Area.
