As of 2021 the community of Espanola is little more than a handful of buildings and a grain elevator surrounded by farms. Espanola is situated 3 miles southwest of Deep Creek.

The city is the site of a psychiatric hospital, Eastern State Hospital, and of Fairchild Air Force Base, two major employers. Medical Lake is situated 5 miles south of Deep Creek.
