The river's three main tributaries are the North, Middle, and South Forks, which drain the west side of the Cascade Mountains near the town of North Bend and join near the town of Snoqualmie just above the Snoqualmie Falls. Denny Camp Falls is situated 2 miles east of Granite Mountain Lookout.

Hyak was established around 1915 at the eastern portal of the Snoqualmie Pass Milwaukee Road Railroad tunnel. Hyak is situated 4½ miles southeast of Granite Mountain Lookout.
