The community is centred around the Waimahana Marae and Te Puhi o Te Waka meeting house, a tribal meeting ground of the Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa hapū of Ngāti Aukiwa and the Ngāpuhi / Ngāti Kahu ki Whaingaroa hapū of Ngāti Aukiwa.
