In the Māori language, "Tīrau" means "place of many cabbage trees." Tīrau is a major junction in the New Zealand state highway network, sitting at the junctions of State Highway 1, State Highway 5, and State Highway 27. Tīrau is situated 10 km northeast of Mangamutu Stream.
