The mill stands 320 feet above sea level and is able to take advantage of incoming sea winds. High Salvington Windmill is situated 2,800 feet northeast of Highdown.

One of Worthing's two Grade I listed buildings, it has been described by architectural critic Ian Nairn as reflecting "the equivocal taste of the 1790s as well as anywhere in the country." Castle Goring was designed by John Rebecca for Sir Bysshe Shelley, 1st Baronet. Castle Goring is situated 1 mile west of Highdown.
