Alwand Dam is a dam located on the Alwand River, southeast of Khanaqin, 6 km from the Iraqi-Iranian border. It is a hydroponic dam with a mud core with a length of 1,342 m and a height of 24 m. Alwand Dam is situated 3½ km east of Halwan.

Khanaqin is the central city of Khanaqin District in Diyala Governorate, Iraq, near the Iranian border on the Alwand tributary of the Diyala River. The town is populated by Kurds who speak the Southern Kurdish dialect. Khanaqin is situated 3½ km north of Halwan.
