The college was founded in 1714 by the benefaction of Sir Thomas Cookes, 2nd Baronet of Norgrove, Worcestershire, whose coat of arms was adopted by the college. The name was chosen in a public vote in 2002, the area having previously been considered an extension of Park End Street and informally known as 'Station Junction' because it passes Oxford railway station. Frideswide Square is situated 470 feet southeast of Oxford Railway Station.
