It is located at Otakayama hill, at the center of Kōchi city, which in turn is located at the center of the Kōchi Plain, the most prosperous area of former Tosa Province on the island of Shikoku. Kochi castle is situated 1¼ km southeast of Engyōjiguchi Station.

It is dedicated to the life and times of Sakamoto Ryōma and to the local area of Kami-machi and Kōchi more generally during the Bakumatsu period. Ryōma’s Birthplace Memorial Museum is situated 1 km south of Engyōjiguchi Station.

Kōchi Castle Museum of History opened in Kōchi, Kōchi Prefecture, Japan, in 2017. Located beside the main gate of Kōchi Castle, the collection tells the history of the Tosa Domain and of the Prefecture, and comprises the 67,000 items formerly preserved, researched, and exhibited at the Tosa Yamauchi Family Treasury and Archives. Kōchi Castle Museum of History is situated 1½ km southeast of Engyōjiguchi Station.
