It was originally opened on 14 July 1947 by the North Eastern Railway, and became part of the Tyne and Wear Metro on 11 August 1980. Longbenton is situated 2,800 feet west of Four Lane Ends.

It was opened in 1871, closed in 1978 for conversion to become part of the Tyne and Wear Metro, and joined that network in 1980. Benton Metro station is situated 2,700 feet northeast of Four Lane Ends.
