Sarkel
Sarkel was a large limestone-and-brick fortress in what is now Rostov Oblast of Russia, on the left bank of the lower Don River. It was built by the Khazars with Byzantine assistance in the 830s or 840s.| Tap on a place to explore it |

Tsimlyansk is a town and the administrative center of Tsimlyansky District in Rostov Oblast, Russia, located on the right bank of the Don River, on the coast of Tsimlyansk Reservoir, 236 kilometers northeast of Rostov-on-Don, the administrative center of the oblast. Tsimlyansk is situated 5 km southwest of Sarkel.
