A Napoleonic-era admiral noted for being second-in-command to Admiral Lord Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar, Collingwood is sometimes referred to as the forgotten hero of Trafalgar. Collingwood Monument is situated 1,200 feet south of Tynemouth Priory.

It joined the network as a terminus station on 11 August 1980, following the opening of the first phase of the network, between Haymarket and Tynemouth via Four Lane Ends. Tynemouth Metro station is situated 2,300 feet west of Tynemouth Priory.
