Penola is a town in the Australian state of South Australia located about 388 kilometres southeast of the state capital of Adelaide in the wine growing area known as the Coonawarra.

Coonawarra is a small town north of Penola in South Australia. It is best known for the Coonawarra wine region named after it. The Aboriginal Australians living in the area when Europeans arrived were the Bindjali people, The word coonawarra is reported to have been their word for honeysuckle, although this meaning has also been ascribed to Penola by the same source. Coonawarra is situated 8 km north of Cyril Black Memorial Area.
