Lhotse is the fourth-highest mountain on Earth, after Mount Everest, K2, and Kangchenjunga. At an elevation of 8,516 metres above sea level, the main summit is on the border between the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and the Khumbu region of Nepal. Lhotse is situated 3 km west of Pic 38.

Lhotse Shar is a subpeak of Lhotse, at 8,383 m high. It was first climbed by Sepp Mayerl and Rolf Walter on 12 May 1970.

South Col

The South Col is a col between Mount Everest and Lhotse, the highest and fourth-highest mountains in the world, respectively. The South Col is typically swept by high winds, leaving it free of significant snow accumulation. South Col is situated 4 km northwest of Pic 38.

The Hillary Step was a 40-foot vertical rock face that sat 8,790 metres above sea level on the southeast ridge of Mount Everest. Some 30 metres vertically below the mountain's 8,849-metre summit, it lay halfway between the "South Summit" and topping out. Hillary Step is situated 5 km northwest of Pic 38.
