Hillary Step

The Hillary Step was a 40-foot vertical rock face that sat 8,790 metres above sea level on the southeast ridge of . Located halfway between the "" and the true summit, the Hillary Step was the most technically difficult part of the typical Nepal-side Everest climb and the last real challenge before reaching the top of the mountain.

The is a col between and , the highest and fourth-highest mountains in the world, respectively. The is typically swept by high winds, leaving it free of significant snow accumulation.

Gorak Shep, also spelled , is a settlement nestled on the periphery of a frozen lakebed blanketed with sand in Nepal, sharing its name with the locale. is situated 9 km west of Hillary Step.
