It was named after Arthur, the son of South Australian Governor Anthony Musgrave, who insisted on this name after it had already been named "Kalkabury". Arthurton is situated 6 km northeast of Lowandale.

The town lies in the traditional lands of the Narungga, whose name for the district is Maggiwarda. Maitland is situated 9 km southwest of Lowandale.
