It was named by Major Thomas Mitchell after the three Napier brothers, who he had served alongside during the Peninsular War. Mount Napier is situated 3 km northeast of Mount Napier State Park.

European settlement began around 1853 by Wendish or Sorbian Lutheran immigrants who gave it the name Neukirch after the town in Saxony. Byaduk is situated 8 km southwest of Mount Napier State Park.
