At 2,286 metres, it is the highest mountain in Norway outside the Jotunheimen range, making it the 24th highest peak in Norway, based on a 30-metre topographic prominence cutoff. Snøhetta is situated 4 km north of Svånåkollen,inste.

It lies about 1.5 kilometres northeast of the mountain Storstyggesvånåtinden and about 2 kilometres south of the mountains Store Langvasstinden and Larstinden. Bruri is situated 2½ km northwest of Svånåkollen,inste.
