It is the church for the Mære parish which is part of the Stiklestad prosti in the Diocese of Nidaros of the Church of Norway. Mære Church is situated 3 km southwest of Sørenghaugen.

The town is located at the northeastern end of the inner-most part of the Trondheimsfjorden, at the mouth of the river Steinkjerelva. Steinkjer is situated 8 km north of Sørenghaugen.
