It is the main church for the Ogndal parish which is part of the Stiklestad prosti in the Diocese of Nidaros. Skei Church is situated 3½ km north of Elseberget.

The town is located at the northeastern end of the inner-most part of the Trondheimsfjorden, at the mouth of the river Steinkjerelva. Steinkjer is situated 6 km northwest of Elseberget.
