The Khon Kaen National Museum was opened by King Bhumibol Adulyadej on 20 December 1972. Most of the exhibits are concerned with history, art, and archaeology. Besides the museum's permanent collection, temporary exhibitions are shown throughout the year. Khon Kaen National Museum is situated 3½ km southeast of Khon Kaen University.

Khon Kaen is the capital of Khon Kaen province and the fourth-largest city in Thailand. It is one of the four major cities of Isan, Northeast Thailand, also known as the "big four of Isan", the others being Udon Thani, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Ubon Ratchathani.
