Thiruvarur, the headquarters of the Thiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, was an important Chola town, as Manu Needhi Chola ruled from here. It is also the birthplace of Carnatic musicians Tyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri.
