Though Beitun District used to be considered part of the countryside, the new Taiyuan Station has urbanized it considerably. Beitun District is situated 4½ km north of Zhong District.

The district has seen rapid growth in recent years with department store and office towers in the 7th redevelopment zone. Nantun District is situated 3½ km west of Zhong District.
