The Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve lies in western Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on its border with Schleswig-Holstein. From 1952 to 1990 large parts of the Schaalsee landscape lay within the military out of bounds area of the Inner German Border.

Goldensee is a lake in the Nordwestmecklenburg district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. At an elevation of 36.1 m, its surface area is 0.94 km2. During the division of Germany, the lake was entirely located in East Germany, but the south/western coast was in West Germany. Goldensee is situated 3½ km north of Heller Teich.
