Gweedore

Gaoth Dobhair or Gweedore is an Irish-speaking area on the northwest corner of County Donegal. Its main settlements are Bunbeg and Derrybeg on the coast, Brinlack further north, and Dunlewey inland, with a population of 4065 in 2003.
Letterkenny

Letterkenny is the largest town in County Donegal, with a population of 22,500 in 2022. It's a workaday place, frankly not scenic, but with lots of accommodation and other visitor amenities.
Donegal Town

Donegal Town is a town in County Donegal in northwest Ireland. With a population of 2700 in 2022, it's neither the county town — that's tiny Lifford — nor the county's largest - that's Letterkenny.

Ballyshannon

Ballyshannon is a market town in southern County Donegal, 22 km south of Donegal Town, and with a population of 2250 in 2022. It's by the estuary of the River Erne and in Irish it's Béal Átha Seanaidh, "the mouth of Seannach's ford".
Tory Island

Tory Island is an island 11 km off the northwest coast of County Donegal, with a population of 119 in 2016: the community are Irish-speaking. It has scrappy remains of a monastery, but the main attraction is the remote scenery, with sea-cliffs swirling with birds.
Glenveagh National Park

Glenveagh National Park is in the Derryveagh Mountains in County Donegal. It was established in 1984 as the third of the six National Parks of the Republic of Ireland.
Buncrana

Buncrana is a town on Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal, on the shores of Lough Swilly. The main reason to come is to explore Inishowen Peninsula, the northern tip of the Irish mainland.
Arranmore

Árainn Mhór or Arranmore is an island 5 km off the west coast of County Donegal. It's a Gaeltacht community where Irish is the official language though English is universally understood.

Glencolmcille is a straggle of villages on the northwest coast of County Donegal, with a population of 217 in 2016. The main settlement is also called Cashel, indicating its cluster of prehistoric and early Christian ritual sites.
Carndonagh

Glenties is a town in the west of County Donegal, which as its name suggests is at the confluence of two scenic glens. In 2022 it was home to more than 900 people. Also described here are Ardara and the beach resort area around Portnoo and Naran.
Falcarragh

Falcarragh is in County Donegal, the largest of a straggle of villages along the coast road, with a population of 764 in 2016. This is a Gaeltacht area where 70% speak Irish and 34% have it as their main language.
Fanad Peninsula

Fanad Peninsula is on the north coast of County Donegal. To its east is Lough Swilly, with Inishowen Peninsula beyond. To its west is Mulroy Bay, with a pinch that is nowadays crossed by the Blaney bridge: this means that Rosguill Peninsula is easily reached, and is also described on this page.
