It contains the tombs of the seventh and ninth Twelver Shī'ī Imāms, respectively Mūsā al-Kādhim and his grandson Muhammad al-Jawad. Kadhimain Shrine is situated 3 km north of اوراق الزيتون.

The mosque was allegedly built in the 7th century over an old Nestorian Christian monastery, and it is now located at least 5 kilometres from the Al-Kadhimiya Mosque.
