The station received its name from the aboveground square Place Émile Bockstael/Émile Bockstaelplein, itself named after the liberal politician and former mayor of Laeken, Émile Bockstael. Built in neo-Gothic style, it was originally erected in memoriam of Queen Louise-Marie, wife of King Leopold I, to the design of the architect Joseph Poelaert.
