Notre-Dame de Paris, often referred to simply as Notre-Dame, is a medieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, France. Notre Dame de Paris is situated 250 metres northeast of Caveau des Oubliettes.

The Île de la Cité is one of two natural islands on the Seine River in central Paris. It spans 22.5 hectares of land. In the 4th century, it was the site of the fortress of the area governor for the Roman Empire.

The 5th Arrondissement of Paris is one of the best known of the city's central districts, located on the Left Bank of the river Seine. Also commonly known as the "Latin Quarter" because the first great Parisian university, the Sorbonne, was founded here and Latin was the language the medieval period students used once to speak.
