Monte Echia is a rocky promontory, entirely made of yellow tuff, located in the Pizzofalcone area, in the San Ferdinando district of Naples. This promontory projects into the Gulf of Naples between the Borgo Santa Lucia to the east, the Chiaia basin to the west, and overlooks the Megaride islet to the south.

The castle's name comes from a legend about the Roman poet Virgil, who had a reputation in the Middle Ages as a great sorcerer and predictor of the future.
